Two hundred twenty-three (223) residents of Barangays 6-A and 9 in Victorias City, all members of fisherfolk organizations, recently received ten (10) fiber glass fishing boats under an initiative facilitated by Third District Representative Dr. Francisco “Kiko” Benitez in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, USAID Fishright Program, Negros 3rd Coastal Resource Management and Development Council, and the local government of Victorias City.
Cong. Benitez and Atty. James Kho, Governance and Institutional Adviser for the Visayas Sea Fishing Management Area for USAID Fishright, led the simple turn-over program held in Barangay 6A, Victorias City last November 27.
The beneficiaries in Barangay 6A included Boulevard Small Fisherfolks Association, Barangay VI-A Women’s Fisherfolks Association, Litib-litib Small Fisherfolks Association, Pasil Fisherfolks Association, and the Victorias City Small Fisherfolks Association. The Small Fishermen Association of Purok 6, Barangay 9 were also among those given.
Barangay 6A Punong Barangay Ana Mae Claro led the beneficiaries who united under Ugyon Baybayanon, in thanking Cong. Benitez and all those who helped the program.
Also present during the turn-over were representatives of Phil. Coast Guard in Victorias and the Victorias Agriculture Office.
Cong. Benitez is principal author of House Bill 10479 recently filed in Congress to establish a framework for blue economy, promoting stewardship and sustainable development of coastal and marine ecosystems and resources in the country.
